In fact, after seeing the final medal count, I was also wondering why they ordered by counting the overal medals. Is it just me who remembers the old days, when the gold medal count was way more important and one gold medal had to be balanced by at least 2 silver or 3 bronze medals?
I think "Die Zeit" just used this old approach (btw. are there any official guidelines?).
