House of Flying Squirrels

Hello Everybody.

Since I treat this blog as a kind of personal memory, too, I want to introduce you to some little tree hugging companions I have at HA5 (where I use to live).

This is a picture of the darker of the two(?) squirrels that are living next to my place, you might also call them neighbors, or gai fong, whatever you like.

They tend to show up in the mornings, when the inhabitants of HA5 sit down for breakfast, and scurry around in the tree next door. See this movie (watch out, it's 18MB large - BTW, and OT, for a discussion of Mega- and Mebibytes see here).

Quite often, I have feared that they have been driven away. Either by the downstairs neighbors' dog, or the dumb Hausmeister's pigeon poison, or the building works next door... but no. They have faithfully stayed around. I admire them for their steadfastness. They do something else every day; looking for food on the farthest branches in winter, flying around in the twigs in spring, chasing each other, building nests in all kinds of different places that get abandoned soon after, etc. etc.

However, they always show up again in the end. In contrast to my own life, theirs is something I could not do anything about - they are free. How do I compare to a squirrel?
